The Mind of the Strategist - Kenichi Ohmae - (McGraw-Hill, 1982) - Ohmae, a highly respected McKenzie consultant, believes that strategic thinking will lead to success.  To achieve competitive advantages companies must use insight and analysis. Strategic thinkers avoid perfectionism, challenge constraints and avoid timidity.  Remembering that there is always a range of alternatives available when facing any situation will help you to learn to exploit opportunity. Still a "must read" after almost 20 years.

The Breakthrough Strategy - Robert H. Schaffer - (Harper & Row, 1988) - During normal times, in most organizations, vast quantities of productive capacity is untapped and frittered away.  This great store of "hidden reserve" is what we observe when organizations rise to meet crisis situations.  This insight is the foundation for "the breakthrough strategy," a strategy that has enabled many organizations to tap into their hidden reserves to produce major performance gains.

Strategy Pure and Simple - Michael Roberts - (R.R. Donnelly, 1993) - A "self-published" book by the author that attempts to sell his company's strategic planning services, the book is nevertheless a straight forward recap of what the author describes as "How winning CEO's out think their competition".  It helps clarify some of the quagmire of terms in strategic planning and is a useful primer of the basic blocking and tackling of strategic planning.
